Gold Price at $4,178 After Warsh Declines to Pre-Judge the…

Updated 16 October 2026. Spot gold traded near $4,178.50 an ounce at 06:57 UTC on Friday 16 October (gold-api.com), up from about $4,148 on Thursday afternoon. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh told a Bangkok audience overnight that he does not “pre-judge” meetings, and the dollar fell. Verdict: Warsh gave hawks nothing new, and that is enough to lift gold back toward $4,200 after a week of hot inflation data. Reference levels: $4,000 below, $4,330 above.

Key facts

Spot, 16 October: about $4,178.50 at 06:57 UTC (gold-api.com). FXStreet had XAU/USD at $4,173.86 at 05:35 GMT, after an intraday high of $4,186.35. December COMEX futures traded at $4,199.10 at 06:46 UTC, against a $4,170.10 close on Thursday (Yahoo Finance).
Warsh in Bangkok: speaking at a fireside chat with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Warsh restated his commitment to price stability and said: “I don’t believe in pre-judging meetings.” He also described himself as “over-scarred” from the global financial crisis (FXStreet).
Dollar: the ICE US Dollar Index was at 101.82 at 06:47 UTC, down from a 102.58 close, about 0.7 percent lower (Yahoo Finance).
Fed odds for 27-28 October: readings this week vary widely by source and time. CME FedWatch priced a hike at 41.5 percent at midday on 14 October after the CPI release (Yahoo Finance). InvestmentNews cited 33.8 percent after Thursday’s PPI. On Friday FXStreet said an October hike was close to priced out. The Fed raised rates to 3.75-4.00 percent on 16 September.
This week’s low: gold briefly fell toward $4,073 after the hot September CPI on 14 October (FXStreet).
Record high: $5,597.23 on 29 January 2026 (Forbes Advisor). Gold is about 25 percent below that peak.

Why a neutral Warsh lifted gold

Gold went into the Bangkok event on the defensive. September CPI came in at 3.7 percent against 3.6 percent expected, and producer prices rose 6.3 percent in a year. Both prints raised the chance that the Fed hikes again in October. A higher policy rate makes a metal that pays no yield less attractive, which is why gold dropped toward $4,073 on Wednesday.

Markets wanted to know whether the new chair would endorse that hike. He did not. Warsh restated his inflation commitment but refused to signal the October decision either way. FXStreet senior analyst Dhwani Mehta read the remarks as neutral with a risk-aware tilt. The “over-scarred” comment suggests a chair who is wary of tightening into a fragile system. Traders sold the dollar, and gold, priced in dollars, rose.

This continues Thursday’s pattern. As we covered in gold after the hot PPI and retail sales data, the metal recovered its entire CPI loss even though PPI was hotter still, because yields and the dollar fell. Gold is trading on the dollar and the Fed path, not on the inflation headlines.

The $4,200 test

FXStreet’s daily chart shows a stack of moving averages just above spot. The 21-day simple moving average sits at $4,201.34, the 100-day at $4,242.23 and the 50-day at $4,331.59. The 200-day is far higher at $4,522.21. Support is the rising trend line near $4,002. The 14-day relative strength index was around 46, which points to fading downside momentum rather than a strong uptrend.

So gold has room to rise, but every $40-$90 above spot there is a level where rallies have stalled. A daily close above the 21-day average would be the first sign the bounce has legs.

Gold price scenarios

Scenario	Level	What gets it there
Bear	$4,000	A Fed official backs an October hike, the dollar rebounds and gold breaks this week’s $4,073 low and the rising trend line near $4,002 (FXStreet). About 4 percent below today’s spot.
Base	$4,200-$4,240	Hike odds keep drifting lower and the dollar stays soft. Gold reaches the 21-day and 100-day moving averages at $4,201 and $4,242 but stalls there.
Bull	$4,330	Markets price out an October hike as an energy-driven inflation spike. Gold clears the 100-day average and runs to the 50-day at $4,332.

All three levels are measured from the verified $4,178.50 spot. They are reference levels, not forecasts.

What to watch

Fed speakers: Warsh flagged the October and December meetings as decision points. Any governor who backs an October move would push hike odds and the dollar back up.
The dollar index: a hold below 102 keeps the path to $4,200 open.
Oil: energy drove most of September’s inflation beat. Brent is still above $105 despite a new IEA diesel release (see our Brent coverage). Cheaper crude would ease hike fears.
27-28 October: the FOMC decision itself. Our Fed odds explainer tracks how pricing moved after CPI.

Quick take: Warsh refused to pre-judge October, the dollar fell about 0.7 percent and gold climbed to about $4,178. The next test is $4,200-$4,240, where the 21-day and 100-day averages sit. A hawkish Fed voice would send it back toward this week’s $4,073 low and the $4,000 trend line. An October hike priced out opens $4,330.

FAQ

What is the gold price today?

Spot gold was about $4,178.50 an ounce at 06:57 UTC on 16 October 2026 (gold-api.com). FXStreet quoted $4,173.86 at 05:35 GMT, and December COMEX futures traded at $4,199.10.

Why is gold up today?

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh gave neutral remarks in Bangkok and declined to pre-judge the October meeting. The dollar index fell about 0.7 percent, which lifted gold.

What did Warsh say in Bangkok?

At a fireside chat with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Warsh restated his commitment to price stability and said he does not believe in pre-judging meetings. He also called himself “over-scarred” from the global financial crisis (FXStreet).

Will the Fed hike rates in October?

It is possible but not the base case. CME FedWatch readings this week ran from about 34 to 42 percent after the CPI and PPI releases. On 16 October FXStreet said a hike was close to priced out. The Fed decides on 28 October.

Can gold get back above $4,200?

The 21-day moving average at $4,201 is the first hurdle, with the 100-day at $4,242 above it (FXStreet). A daily close above $4,201 would be the first sign the rebound can extend toward $4,330.

Where is support for gold?

This week’s low near $4,073, then the rising trend line near $4,002. A break of both is the bear case of $4,000.
