Six Flags Shares Fall After a Fatal Goliath Coaster…

Six Flags Entertainment shares fell nearly 17% on Tuesday after a fatal roller-coaster incident at Six Flags Over Georgia prompted the company to temporarily shut nine rides at six other parks during the Halloween season.

FUN was trading at $9.91 at 1:53 p.m. ET, down 16.8% from Monday’s $11.92 close. The stock had actually finished Monday’s regular session 4.43% higher before reversing sharply once news of the incident emerged.

Investing.com recorded the shares at $10.87 at 8:39 p.m. ET Monday, down 8.8% in after-hours trading, while CNBC reported an after-hours decline of more than 10%. The stock was still down about 7% in Tuesday premarket trading before selling accelerated once the regular session opened.

That adds another setback to a stock that was already under pressure. CNBC said Six Flags shares were down roughly 22% year to date before the incident.

Police Say the Rider Was Ejected, but the Cause Remains Under Investigation

The incident occurred at approximately 3:58 p.m. local time on Monday, October 12, according to Cobb County Police.

One person died and several others were injured. Police said Tuesday that preliminary information gathered from witness and employee interviews indicates that the rider was ejected from the coaster and struck other patrons before falling beneath the attraction.

Investigators have not established how or why the rider came out of the seat, and Six Flags has not given a cause. The Cobb County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating, while Georgia’s Office of Insurance and Safety Fire has begun what it described as an in-depth review.

Six Flags said it was cooperating fully with authorities and supporting affected guests and employees.

The company has not provided a timetable for completing the investigation or reopening the Georgia coaster.

Six Flags Closed Nine Other Coasters “Out of an Abundance of Caution”

The immediate financial issue for investors is no longer confined to one attraction in Georgia.

Six Flags temporarily closed nine similar roller coasters across six other parks “out of an abundance of caution.” The closures include Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America in Illinois and Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey.

Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds in North Carolina and Leviathan and Behemoth at Canada’s Wonderland in Ontario are also among the rides taken out of operation.

Six Flags has not said why each specific coaster was selected or what inspections or other work must be completed before the rides return to service.

The timing is significant because October is a major seasonal period for the operator, with Fright Fest and other Halloween events designed to bring guests into parks after the peak summer months.

There is an important qualification to the immediate revenue risk. Associated Press reported that the six affected parks were already scheduled for seasonal midweek closures on Tuesday and Wednesday. The more important question for investors is therefore whether the rides remain unavailable when the parks reopen for their Halloween operating days later this week.

Six Flags Already Had Legal Exposure Before the Georgia Incident

The Georgia investigation arrives while Six Flags is dealing with separate litigation tied to another coaster.

Six Flags Magic Mountain permanently retired its X2 coaster in late September after reports of serious rider injuries. Three lawsuits filed in September allege that riders suffered severe brain injuries after riding X2, while the California park previously settled a wrongful-death lawsuit involving a guest who died after riding the coaster in 2022.

Those cases are separate from Monday’s incident and do not establish liability in Georgia.

Six Flags’ latest Form 10-Q nevertheless shows why accident-related litigation is financially relevant to the investment case. At June 28, the company reported approximately $45.5 million of current self-insurance reserves and $95.8 million of non-current self-insurance reserves, or roughly $141.3 million combined. It also carried about $12.5 million in litigation reserves.

The company says its self-insurance reserves cover estimated guest and employee claims, including both identified claims and losses incurred but not yet reported. None of those figures should be interpreted as a reserve for the Goliath incident, which occurred months after the reporting date.

Six Flags Stock Is Pricing an Unknown Operational Cost

That distinction helps explain Tuesday’s market reaction.

Investors do not yet know whether the Georgia investigation will result in a short inspection process, extended ride closures, litigation, additional regulatory requirements or a broader effect on attendance. The stock is therefore being repriced before the direct financial cost can be calculated.

FinanceFeeds recently saw a similar pattern in another safety-sensitive industry when Boeing shares fell 6.9% after the FAA delayed certification of the 737 MAX 10. In that case, as here, the immediate market issue was uncertainty over the duration and operational consequences of a safety-related restriction rather than a fully quantified cost.

For Six Flags, the next important information is not speculation about what caused Monday’s incident. It is how long the nine precautionary closures last, what investigators determine about Goliath and whether the closures extend into the coming Halloween weekends.

Until those questions are answered, Tuesday’s nearly 17% fall leaves Six Flags stock pricing a risk whose size is still unknown.
